One of my first jobs out of college was quoting sheet metal parts for a company that I was working for. Besides offering engineering support, most of my day was taken up by quoting or sending emails, following up with quotes or basic sales work.  The custom software that our company had did the job however after a quote was completed, I would need to print it out and then type the numbers into an Excel spreadsheet and then finally write an email and send it to the customer.  This all took a long time and we were never guaranteed the work….

Thousands of quotes later, I started to dream up a better quoting system.  I had some experience with software development from school, so I pitched the new and improved software program to the owner of the company. From there a developer friend of mine and I spent the next year building the new quoting system and licensed the first and only copy to my employer.  The software was great and made things much easier, however, it needs a server, a database, and the installation was difficult.  I wanted to develop the software more, however, I needed a way to easily install the software.  Just about this time, web applications were just coming out, however, they had a long way to go.  So…… I quit my job and started a Machine shop and forgot about the software business for a while. 

Once I had the machine shop up and running, we had the same problem with quoting.  It took a long time and took the majority of my day.  I needed to do a lot of repetitive work with Excel and email.  One lesson that learned, was that a lot of the time the first quote received would get the job so I made a point to turn around quotes as soon as possible.  At the end of the day and thousands of quotes later I wanted a better quoting system and knew that thousands of manufacturing business needed the same thing. 

So… I sold the machine shop, moved to Austin, TX and connected with a friend of mine who is a high-end enterprise developer.  I pitched him the idea and showed him the current software that I had.  We founded
a new company and got to work on MasterQuote.
